<<INTERMEDIATE HURLING>>

Courceys and Newcestown in thriller
Courcey Rovers 0-10, Newcestown 0-10

It may have been thirty years since both clubs met in the cauldron of championship combat, but none of that age old rivalry was missing at Brinny on Saturday evening when another generation of hurlers from Courcey Rovers and Newcestown lined out in the opening round of the Cork County TSB/Permanent intermediate hurling championship.

At the end of a stirring struggle it was all square and few could complain, except maybe Courceys, who had the better chances of easing past the post in this, their inaugural game in this particular championship, following their wonderful success on being crowned county junior champions for the first time last year.

This game, which had been fixed for Kilbrittain on the previous Sunday, was called off shortly before the start due to ground conditions, but on Saturday last the expansive and splendid Brinny venue provided the perfect platform for this eagerly-awaited game.
While the game overall was always exciting, mainly due to the closeness of the scoring, the sides were level on eight occasions, it never really opened up, mainly due to the close working of both sets of defenders and as a result, we had the majority (12) of the total score from placed balls.

Not that it mattered to both sets of supporters in the big attendance who were kept on their toes from start to finish as the lead changed on four occasions, before Newcestown’s excellent free-taker, Conor O’Donovan, tied the tie for the last time in the 55th minute with a wonderful strike from a 65m free out on the left wing.
In hindsight, it was no more than the West Cork men deserved, having lost the services of their outstanding centre back, Pat Kenneally in the 48th minute for a second bookable offence. Up till then his experience stood out in a solid half back line, with Padraig Crowley and Brian Crowley two excellent flankers.

At the other end Courceys too, had their heroes in the half back line with Timmy Lordan showing the way, having had four different opponents over the hour, while man of the match Vincent Hurley, displayed all his splendid skills, together with Cork minor, David Murphy, on the wings.
Newcestown, playing against the breeze, drew first blood when Brian O’Donovan pointed after thirty seconds from a Kenneally delivery. By the fourth minute, the ever-accurate Niall Murphy had converted a 65 and a free from 60m to give Courceys the lead from the resultant puck-out, Newcestown launched an attack through the impressive Eoin Twomey, which ended with keeper Anto Hegarty denying full forward Padraig Condon at the expense of a fruitless 65.

By the twelfth minute, the lead had changed hands as Conor O’Donovan, from a free, and Aidan O’Sullivan finished in style, but by the end of the quarter, it was level again when Brian Hayes (KK) finished a long delivery from Lordan between the posts.
With midfielder Kevin Long having to leave the field, due to a nose injury, the Newcestown mentors reshuffled their attack with the introduction of last year’s football captain, Dan McCarthy and by the 22nd minute, a mighty free by Pat Kenneally from 60m out on the left flank had the sides level at 0-4 each.

Again Courceys came thundering back and with midfielder Denis Twomey thundering into the game, they launched a series of attacks, but three bad wides halted their progress before the West Cork side earned a close-in free, when the ever-dangerous Condon was fouled and Conor O’Donovan duly obliged from the 20m award.
However, Courceys, through the speed and skill of Vincent Hurley who took off on a 50m solo, before being halted by Pat Kenneally, again Pat Kenneally obliged from the free and when corner back Cathal Crowley, under pressure, took the ball over the end line, Murphy was again on target to give his side an 0-6 to 0-5 lead at the break.

Following the resumption, the exchanges continued to be fast and furious. After Murphy and Condon had exchanged early scores, Courceys were to miss two good chances while at the other end a wonderful interception by Vincent Hurley in front of the goal, saved a certain goal for Newcestown.
Two wonderful scores by Rovers Seamus Hayes and Newcestown’s Conor O’Donovan, kept the temperature high and when Jim O’Sullivan made his entry for Newcestown — he was married the previous day — the Newcestown man was yellow carded immediately for an unnecessary challenge on his opponent.

Courceys still clung to their one point lead at the end of the third quarter when Vincent Hurley’s 75m free for a foul on himself sailed between the posts, and shortly after they had the best chance of the game when, following a great solo by Michael O’Donovan, now on the left wing, ended with John Murphy failing to finish to the net from close-in.
Despite the absence of Kenneally, Newcestown, in traditional fashion, refused to throw in the towel and in the 51st minute O’Donovan had once again levelled matters at 0-9 each.

With excitement now running high, young Michael O’Donovan, who was proving to be a thorn to the Newcestown defence, fired over a great score to restore the lead for Courceys, but two minutes later, Conor O’Donovan continued with his free-taking delights when his conversion from 60m out on the right wing tied the scores for the last time.
Both teams tried gamely to the end, both had missed chances, Courceys appeared to have been denied a 65m award, while Newcestown’s Eoin Twomey was unlucky when he dropped his hurley when passing to a colleague while at the other end, keeper Charlie Wilson did well to hold his ground under pressure from a Michael O’Donovan delivery, before excellent referee Diarmuid Kirwan called a halt to a truly entertaining championship game. The replay at Brinny should be well worth seeing.
